Book Review : The Fishermen by Chigozie Obioma

” We were fishermen. My brothers and I became “

This book ended really sad for me, in fact, from the beginning to the end, it was sad.

I was just deliberating in my mind about how good things would have turned out, if the characters made better decisions, if they learnt to let go, if they were less temperamental. And then I had to tell myself ‘this is just a book, the author had it all planned out’.

Ikenna, Boja, Obembe, Ben, are brothers who grew up in a loving family with 2 other younger siblings, were they had parents who guarded them through.

But things soon started to change for the worse when their father left akure, a state in Nigeria, to work in another state. Their father’s absence from home made them become fishermen without their mother’s consent. They went to fish at the accursed omi ala river, where all of their troubles started right after they met Abulu, the village mad man and harbinger of evil prophecies.

Things soon took turn for the worst and soon, the once happy family is thrown into chaos, after abulu prophesied that boja will be the one to kill his elder brother Ike.

Series of event took turns and I found myself pitying the parents mostly, whenever ben recounted how their father had wanted them to become doctors, lawyers and all of these great people, I get even sadder.

I really wish the story had a happier ending, though I feel it ended well.

If you want a sad, mind twisting read, this book is absolutely for you. Chigozie Obioma did a great one with this.

4.5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐🌟

Books are my dearest companion in my alone days. And they will always be.
